Mission:
Monsters are real
Location: Chief Security's Officer
Timeline: Shortly after coming aboard
The first thing Maggie did when attempting to check out her office was to contact operations to find out why her access code didn't work. It took several tries--and a computer reset--for her to finally get in.
At least the young ensign seemed competent, even though her hair kept changing color. Maggie found it fascinating. It seemed to change based on the ensign's mood. But she didn't feel it appropriate to ask about it. So, she simply said thank you and let the ensign go back to her duties.
Then she took a few minutes to rearrange the desk to her liking.
Needing an overview of the department, Maggie then asked Lieutenant Taggart to report to her office.
There had been word about the changing of the guard as it were, Adam wasn't certain just what this new person was going to be like.
After the whole exchange he'd had with Rogers when the man came on board the ship, you could say Adam was a bit leery.
In spite of his wariness, Adam wasn't going to have the new department head be kept waiting.
The door to the office, opened, with Taggart stepping inside memories as to the last meeting, with Rogers, flooded his mind with strong emotions.
Anger, frustration, were there coloring his mind. Rogers was gone.
Taggarts desire to take Rogers into the ring and settle things with a few flying fists and some well-aimed knee strikes. Unrequited violence.
Taggart stopped dead in his tracks, all thoughts grinding to a halt, seeing the new department head. She wasn't someone he expected to see.
"So, lieutenant, tell me about the former chief," Maggie said quietly. His emotions were loud and raw. She wanted to address that first.
He swallowed hard. Her looks, the way she spoke, she was attractive yes but--Doyl despite her looks and her stature is a department head. She earned her way to where she was now. That was his own assessment.
He stiffened to attention, "Ma'am" Taggart began, "To be quite blunt, he wasn't the sort of person who should have been a department head in the first place. Filled with his own hubris, felt he knew how to run things better than the Captain. Well, that is my own opinion."
Taggart cleared his throat, shifting his feet a little bit to where he stood more solid. "He had grand ideas as to how to do things. He even brought in his own special team and utilized them predominately. We have a good security team here and yet, he left them swinging in the wind. I had asked him if he had cleared it with the Captain."
"And what did he say?" Maggie had more questions now, but she remained calm and professional. She still wasn't sure if the former chief had good reasons for his actions or not. She wasn't going to jump to conclusions.
Adam gave pause as he sorted out his mind, "Actually, Commander, I hadn't asked him if he cleared his team with the CO. I actually asked him about the weapons. Then I went to check with the XO and then we went to talk to the Captain. Forgive my error on that part. It was more on his decision to bring up different weapons, that he'd not cleared with the captain. Rogers, came in like he owned the place. Granted, I do have strong feelings where he is concerned."
"Yes, I noticed that," she said dryly. "What sort of weapons were they?" It sounded like there was a lot going on with the former chief and she wasn't sure she liked it.
Adam brought up the conversation he had with Rogers, reading his own personal dictations. "He brought up Specs for a gauss/phaser rifle, pretty much said they were pretty much a nightmare on bulkheads as well. Counterproductive when outside of atmo. Holodeck parameters will need to be reset so that they align better with the operation. Not much of a kick to them since their magnetic, but enough that newbies feel it and it tends to throw off aim. This is the main reason for the four hours of training. If Captain approves them, we'll begin replicating the weapons and issue them prior to transport. SWAT/S will be included in every transport group and will be the security in charge until we eradicate the threat."
Adam closed up his padd with a huff. "That is some of the notes I took. I could be considered a troll but what he did, I felt, needed to be recorded. And yes his own swat team--seriously?"
"That's not new tech. Electromagnetic weapons have been around for a very long time. Why did he think they'd be more effective that what we currently have? I personally prefer a wide angle stun when I can use it." She shook her head. "Did he get any farther than suggesting the change? Something like that would need command approval."
"I went to the XO to find out if he had." Taggart shook his head, at the memory. "Apparently Rogers hadn't gone through proper channels yet. The XO and the Captain were a bit surprised to find out about the specialized team and the desired weapons. In order to have a ship run semi smoothly there does need to be communications."
Adam paused there as another memory rose to the surface of his mind. His face coloring a little bit. "I am sorry Commander, here I go again telling a department head on how things should run. I well sort of made a goof in that regard where the Captain and XO were concerned."
His shoulders, that had been tensed up when he had spoken, lowered. "Before you came and before Rogers had arrived, we had--lost some crew due to a changeling having somehow gotten on board. We found that Commander McGuire had been murdered.
"Then, there was the loss of security and other crew who had gone on a mission. They were brutally killed by...well some had called it a monster. And it was definitely a monstrosity, not seeming to be able to be killed at first. I can make a report on that for you to read, very soon." Adam recovering from his first initial embarrassment.
"If it's not already in the computer logs, please do so soonest." Maggie would let the part about him telling her how to do her job go for now. It sounded like the former chief wasn't one for following protocol.
Maggie indicated the chair opposite her desk. "Have a seat. I would like you to tell me how the former chief ran the department. I know how I like things done, and I know how other people I've worked with run their departments, but I don't want to come in and run roughshod over what people are doing now. Especially if it works. Then we'll see about making changes."
While he got comfortable, she pulled up a document to take notes. After this, she'd take another look at the profiles of her team and find an opportunity to meet with each of them. Or, better yet, work with each of them. It was important that they got comfortable with her. Then she'd start making changes.
