Mission:
What was Lost is Found
Location: Valhalla Lounge
Daegan waited until their guests were seated before taking his. "Now while I am sure the speculation as to how both a Federation and Romulan ship appeared all they way out here will be discussed and theorized for some time. My two primary concerns are your immediate needs and what happened after your arrival.
First things first, immediate needs," looking to his staff, "where do we stand?"
Edruj spoke first. "At the moment the ship is functioning adequately. However, with the Romulans out here as well I would like to make sure that there is a back up for the back ups."
Commander Hunt took his place, standing off to the right side of Daegan. But a few steps back. The group had been very impressed by the tour. Though there was some reservations from one or two people in the group. Which in all honesty was expected. History always reflected those who were worried about change. And this was as big as change could get for these folks.
"And what, exactly, do you mean 'backups to backups' because of the Romulans?" Yuvana asked, stroking one tipped ear in a meaningful gesture indicating her own half-Romulan heritage, as well as that of her fellow counselors. Thought it was the younger officer that spoke, she settled her gaze on the captain. After all, didn't crews take their cues from their leaders? "For that matter, if there are Romulans in the area - " here she gave a sniff as she was still not satisfied by the earlier answer as to why they were "lost" for so long if everyone in the galaxy seemed to know they were here now - "why are they not here to meet with us as well? Are there still considerations between Romulans and the Federation?"
Looking over to the Captain, Jerome felt it best to let him address that particular concern that was brought up. After this was over, Hunt would have to meet with Edruj and speak with her about her lack of tact.
Baas had cringed internally at the reaction to the young engineers statement and he addressed her directly. "Counselor Yuvana, I'm sure the Lieutenant meant no disrespect in her statement. It is our practice to have multiple redundancies for key systems regardless of who is operating those systems. Another point is that the equipment we are providing has never been operated by any one of your people. Human and Romulan alike.
"Your other concerns, I personally contacted the closest Romulan Ambassador and he his waiting on information from me. Specifically the names of those from the Sahriv that survived the crash, just as Starfleet is awaiting the list of survivors from the Ulysses. I cannot speak for the Empire, but the Federation is dispatching a ship to help educate everyone below on not only the technology, but on the events you all missed out on over the last century......Including the improving of relations between the Federation and the Romulan Empire.
"We haven't come together like your people have, but we are working on it. Perhaps that's something you can teach us?"
Kurul nodded. "During the tour my colleague was concerned...curious as to why we were not found sooner. Perhaps you could address that before we continue?"
"Honestly quite a bit was happening the year you all went missing at least on the Federation side of things," Hunt responded. "The Federation was admitting a world or two at the time. Dealing with the Gorn and Tholians. Romulan Empire and the Klingon Empire had fallen out that year. When ships disappeared, searches ended after a while."
With a hand Daegan gestured to his XO nodding. "All very true, but you all may not fully realize the full distance you traveled. Our current position is beyond the edge of known space today, the map was considerably different 100 years ago. The... incident between the two ships happened in the Taugus Sector, near the Neutral Zone. We are on the far side of the borders of ever major power in the Alpha and Beta quadrants."
Glancing to Urushi, "As I understand it the radiation from antimatter detonation prevent subspace communication."
Urushi nodded. "In a way," she said. "Luckily our subspace antenna is strong enough to cut through the interference. Plus, our computer has the ability to 'clean up' the transmission. I've looked over the specs of the Constitution and the T'Liss classes. Unfortunately, their subspace antenna and equipment isn't strong enough to get back to either The Federation or the Romulan Empire. That's if they weren't damaged, with any damage it would have been impossible." She explained as she placed her PADD down on the table. "Frankly, for older out-dated technologies and vessels, this area is a black-zone in the terms of communications."
"The distance traveled, the fact that no one knew anyone was alive, and fact that there was no way for you to reach out, it was shear luck one of the probes we launched passed through this system or it may have been some time before your settlement was found, as we explored the region."
Kurul looked from the Captain and Commander to Yuvana with a subtle smirk.
"And if we decide," Yuvana said, glancing at the rest of the council members, "that we want you to continue on your explorations and leave us be?" It was a question that had been weighing on her since she saw her planet on the monitors and then reinforced by the subtle bigotry stated by the young officer. They'd already upgraded, replaced or installed new equipment in their homes. That would be a sticky subject, she was sure, but she was beginning to doubt that the Federation or Romulans were suitable homes for most of her people. Some, like her fellow council members, may be able to return to Romulus and resume lives they left long ago, but what about members of the community like her? Where did she fit in? Could she even claim to be one or the other considering she was born on the planet and lived there her entire life. As did her children, her grandchildren? So many others were not of these empires.
That was an answer that the First Officer wasn't in a position to answer. Neither Baas or himself ever really sat down and discussed the matter. Naturally they wouldn't force this people off this world. But that wouldn't stop Federation or Romulan forces from coming out here.
Daegan spread his hands as he lifted them, "This planet is now yours and how you choose to proceed is up to you. If you want us to leave we will leave, and let you be."
Kurul interjected. There was a great deal to be discusses and deciding their future would need to wait until the full council was convened. A grin spread over his face as he looked back to the Captain and his officers, "Apologies for the diversion, we have been on our own for so long the idea of outside help can be difficult for some, please continue."
Taking a sip of his spritzer, Doctor Tanaka elected to go next. "I am pleased to report pretty much all of the patients that we screened were in exceptionally good health, especially given the absence of modern pharmaceuticals and other medical devices that we take for granted. My sincerest compliments, of course, to both Miss Kouri and her ancestors in this regard- they have gone above and beyond the line of duty in both archiving existing medical procedures for future generations, as well as improvising new procedures with the resources that were immediately available to them."
Niami didn't have much to say she was mostly listening and gauging everyone's reactions. Not truly feeling that there is something she could truly add to this. Which she didn't mind.
"Very good." Seeing his own counselor looking bit uncertain he gave her a little push. "Lt. Troga. How are the people on the surface reacting to our arrival?"
Niami felt the captain's gaze upon her, she adjusted her attention to him. "The emotions were a maelstrom. Some glad that we had arrived. Some were wary. Others, curious as they were born on the planet and knew nothing else. Other were angry. That was my perceptions"
Baas nodded. "I see. Well I guess that mix is only to be expected. We'll just have to keep demonstrating our good intentions. Hopefully that will be enough. With no critical medical needs we can leave the medical upgrades to our relief. What about power or other supply needs?"
Edruj stood in front of her seat. "The installation of the new reactor is going according to specifications. Lieutenant O'Reily is seeing to that personally. The colonists have requested replicator technology. I informed them that I would bring the matter to you sir. With all due respect sir I do not see a reason not to give them the technology. It would assist them in maintaining their equipment in the future."
Jason stood up next, holding and once again glancing at his PADD. "Depending on the degree of cooperation and desire from the colony as a whole, we can set them up for a good number of years, but this planet is deficient on the materials to sustain fusion for more than a decade or two with what's available. They'll need to explore other options for long term viability, be it external resupply or a complete shift to another source." A quick pause was taken as he looked again at the PADD.
"Infrastructure wise, they're in a good place. The new transmitter is working and can cut through the interference, but we would need to use a relay system and possibly a GPS satellite setup to keep contact constant if that is there wish. Operations wise, we can't do much more until we know how they want to proceed." Jason summarized, then nodded again and sat.
Daegan pulled at his chin as he considered the options before him there were this they could do and things they couldn't but time would tell. As Jason finished, added his comments to the list. The idea of a relay satellite would be beneficial, if needed.
