Mission:
What was Lost is Found
Location: Bridge Conference Room
Timeline: MD 5 - 1340
It had been an hour since the probes information had shown them what shouldn't have been anywhere near area of space. But the scans had been confirmed, the question was how it had happened. Daegan had crossed over from his ready room several minutes ago admittedly anxious to hear what his crew had been able to dig out of those scan over the last hour.
Getting up to refresh his drink the doors opened as people began to arrive.
Darius was a bit surprised when he walked into the conference room and found himself the only officer there besides the Captain, especially since he had stepped away to go to his office to access the data from the probes more comprehensively. Without consciously being aware, he tugged at the corner of his uniform jacket pulling it tighter. "Sir," he said. "Am I just the first one, or is it just going to be the two of us. Did I hear wrong?"
Returning to his seat, "I'm sure the rest will be here shortly." As the door opened again, "Here we go..."
The door opened and Niami stepped through, she was here as requested by Baas. "Good Morning Captain Baas, and Lieutenant Korveth." walking over and getting a cup of tea for herself before the briefing began.
Liam walked in a coffee in one hand and his PaDD in the other "Captain and Lieutenants" he commented with a smile then found a empty seat waiting for everyone else to arrive.
Smiling at his engineer with slight chuckle, "Good afternoon. Your day must by flying by."
Liam grinned "Yes, pretty much since there's a lot to oversee on a ship this size" he replied.
"Apologies for the delay, Captain," Doctor Tanaka announced as he entered the room and found himself a seat adjacent Liam. "Just had to finish filling out a new prescription for Lieutenant Briggs to treat his Thritic Saphritis."
Rogers entered, his tea mug full this time and he sincerely hoped this meeting wouldn't last longer than the beverage. He went to the seat he last occupied, even though it set him next to the counselor - not exactly an ideal situation for him. But...he recalled something from on the Bridge prior. "Counselor," he said, quietlyl, after seating himself, "everything okay?"
"I was just worried about Aseek's station, that is all, now that I know someone is going to be taken care of it, that is good enough for me," Niami answered softly.
"Right, good then," Rogers said as he looked around the room. He'd had busy days with not just the work of the department chief, but getting caught up on being a department chief. Than this situation. He wondered how the other new chiefs were also holding up.
O'Riley spoke up after overhearing the Counselor, "Lieutenant Troga engineering has already taken care of the station to make sure it remains safe in orbit for many years to come," he assured her.
Hobbes & Sizia arrived together and Hobbes took his seat as Sizia placed two padds by the Captain before taking her usual spoke as the Captain's yeoman and scribe.
The door slid open again, and Ryan Kellerman stepped through. His boots made muffled sounds against the carpeted deck, but his presence was felt otherwise. He gave the room a single, measured glance, his eyes registering the cluster of uniforms already gathered.
"Captain," he said evenly, his voice direct and professional. A nod that was neither too long nor too short followed, simply acknowledging the authority at the head of the table. His eyes meandered across the others--another acknowledgment to familiar faces but once again firmly professional.
He moved to the chair near Tanaka and sat without a fuss, sliding the back of his hand against the armrest. The room smelled faintly of tea, coffee, and recycled starship air.
Urushi entered carrying a single PADD in her hand that she was reading. She slipped quietly into an empty seat.
"Ah, Lieutenant," Ayumu greeted upon Urushi's arrival. "How's your wound been healing? Hopefully no complications?"
"Its fine, most likely to your excellent with Ayumu." Urushi smiled.
Hunt walked into the room, looking at the senior staff gathering around the table. In the next few minutes a number of theories were about to be released. It seems like this mystery had more and more layers to it.
Darius watched the doors open, even after all these years, even though he was in a safe environment surrounded by fellow Starfleet officers, old habits, old instincts died hard. So he was observing ever entry, every nuance.
When he saw who it was who had just entered, his eyes followed him as he moved to sit three chairs down from him. It was a different kind of instinct that prompted that close scrutiny.
The doors parted with their usual hiss a moment before Jason would have bumped into them, his fingers flying across the surface of his PADD as he entered. "Captain, all." Came out in the more formal tone Jason usually used, as he looked around and found an open seat to occupy.
Ryan looked up as Jason slipped into the room. There was a certain lightness to the man's movements--quick and economical. His brown hair always seemed well-groomed and his green eyes were polished as glass. He caught himself watching a little longer than he should have, but he had a great respect for the Valkyrie's Operations officer and his work ethic.
Darius had been looking down at his PADD when the Operations Chief entered. He glanced up. He was about to return to his examination of its content when he caught Ryan out of his peripheral vision. The look he gave was innocent in nature as far as he could tell, but it seemed to linger.
As each person walked into the briefing room. Niami registered their emotional levels but keeping quiet as things moved on.
With everything unfolding, the meeting was going to center on what the probe had detected as it passed through the system. Activating the table's holo-projector, displaying the image of an old starship floating in an area of space no Federation starship should be in.
"We have a mystery on our hands. Before we get too deep into the weeds on the how, let's deal with what we know for sure." Looking to Mallory, "Have we been able to identify that ship?"
"Without going abord to grab the computer core and navigation records? The identity transponder reports as the USS Ulysses, Constitution class. Records show the last contact was on SD 7396, about 130 years ago. The other issue is the last reported position was a good 200 or so lightyears from here." Jason responded. While he loved a good mystery, this was definitely unusual.
Daegan wrinkled his brow. "The Ulysses? That ship disappeared near the Romulan Neutral Zone." Looking from the holo-image to his Engineer, "Liam, Where you able to ascertain the ships condition? Are we looking at recent damage, damage over the years?"
Accessing his PaDD "It would appear that the ship is heavily damaged and has been stripped for parts....the anti-matter was removed, fusion reactor removed, and the shuttles are missing" then he paused "As far as when all this happened Captain, it's really anyone's guess but most likely the majority of the damage came when they still had a crew aboard" O'Riley concluded with some certainty.
"I may be leaping to conclusions, Captain, but this whole situation seems awfully suspicious," Ayumu surmised. "A ship that went missing over 130 years ago suddenly turns up 200 light years from its last known position, derelict and stripped for parts?"
"If they stripped the ship and took the shuttles, it's likely that their warp drive was too badly damaged to be repaired." Urushi said. "It wouldn't surprise me if they located a class M world to relocate to; however after all this time there wouldn't be any living survivors. Well, unless they had a Vulcan aboard... Also if they decided to have children, there could be descendants." The Trill explained. "I can scan for planets within range?"
Addressing each in turn, "Well it wouldn't be the first time some anomaly had moved a starship though space...or even time for that matter. Check the crew roster of any that might have survived until now. If none, as you said, the descendants of the crew may be on that planet. However now isn't the time for speculation. We are already en route so hopefully the answers will be waiting for us.
"In the mean time lets be ready for what we might find. Liam, have your people scan the Ulysses once we arrive. See if there are any traces of what happened and possibly when. Darius, Ryan, see if there is any information from that period that might shed some light on the current situation. Jason, Christian, Ayumu, have teams ready to see to any need any survivors, or their descendants, might have."
"Aye, Sir," Ayumu nodded.
Niami just quietly listened and sipped her tea.
The First Officer thought about all the questions and looking at all the confused looks. "Odds are these are the descendants of that crew. No need to go crazy with speculation, because I am sure those descendants would be more than happy to speak with us and give us their history."
Ryan sat forward slightly, the holo image of the battered Constitution-class ship painted in faint blue light. He let Commander Hunt finish his thread before speaking. "If I may, Captain--before we assume survivors or descendants, we should also consider the opposite. A derelict stripped this clean could just as easily have been prey. Pirates, scavengers, even opportunistic traders from a century ago. We might be chasing a shadow."
Ryan folded his hands in front of him neatly, unsure if his input would be considered, before adding, "If it was the crew who stripped her, that tells us they had the presence of mind to plan for survival. But if it wasn't..." He let the sentence trail-off, allowing the silence to do its own work.
Rogers listened to the others while he was preparing the security contingent for the away teams. A mix of old school security and his SWAT/S teams. Plus, he'd learned from Hannah they had a second combat medic aboard the ship. He didn't know much about the man, but he was former FMF as well so he might have gumption and the ability to shoot straight at the enemy rather than wildly at friends. But this last bit caught his attention. "Either way, I think it needs to be determined. If we're in an area where pirates or scavengers may be operating, they won't be happy to see a Starfleet delegation, no matter the reason. If it's survivors, then we owe it to them to at least make contact and see if a rescue is necessary."
Rogers glanced around the room. "Or repatriate the remains if necessary."
Daegan look from Ryan to Rogers nodding, "Well we don't know when the Ulysses was stripped, or by who. Lets keep a close eye on the long range sensors as we approach and be ready to raise the alert level if needed."
Looking to Niami, "Counselor, I will want you on the bridge when we arrive in the event you sense anything."
Niami gave a nod as to his request. "Yes Captain." she softly said. She hoped she didn't sense anything like the other 'thing' she had sensed before. Though as time was proceeding forward, Niami had a nagging thought that her hope for not sensing anything was going to be fruitless.
"I do have some experience with pirates," Darius said, "not that I'm assuming anything, but I'd like to volunteer for the Away Team. It is after all my area of expertise. And I can handle myself in a fight if it comes to that, maybe even help talk our way out of one altogether."
Smiling at his eagerness, "Let's get there and figure out what we are dealing with first, but I'm sure Commander Hunt will keep that in mind."
Looking to those assembled, "Anything else?"
Niami shook her head, "Not from me, Captain."
Glancing around the table a seeing that there was nothing to be added. "Alright then. We should arrive in just under 24 hrs., plenty of time to get your teams ready by the time we arrive. Dismissed."
